ABOUT

“There is an inherent beauty and energy to be found in old recycled timber, that is impossible to find today. It holds in its grain the stories of forests long gone today, when the bush was wild and untamed. These stories are the guiding force behind the forms we create. We design minimal, bold pieces that highlight this natural beauty and hold their relevance regardless of the current trend.

We use a combination of hand carpentry and modern machinery to craft our work, prioritizing sophisticated joinery that is enduring and strong. Purchasing from us is an investment, and we know that it’s value will grow as the years go on. There will come a day where this old timber is no longer found, and so those who hold a piece of it, will hold a piece of history.”

Hoop Studio was founded in 2020 by Harry Pullar, a frustrated graduate architect sitting at a desk who just wanted to get his hands dirty. Furniture construction made sense as he was able to take responsibility for the materials he was using, whilst also demonstrating his innate creative flair. Using his connections in the construction industry, he began to drive around to job sites picking up the old timber and building unique pieces in the carport. A love affair with timber developed that is still running strong today. Harry runs the Studio workshop today with two other makers.

The types of work we do

  1. One-off custom designed and built loose furniture.

  2. Integrated solid timber joinery such as benchtops, stairs, balustrades, shelving and doors.

  3. Designed and built fit outs with an emphasis on recycled timber.

  4. Made-to-order, studio designed furniture pieces and homewares.

Process

Our process is a little unique. We don’t have the luxury of being able to order our supplies at the drop of a hat, so we are constantly sourcing quality recycled timbers which we work through and keep stock of at our workshop. This is our typical process:

  1. Timber Sourcing: We source our timber through local demolition contractors who are knocking down houses, and on occasion will source through local recycled material yards when we’re running short.

  2. Processing: The timber always needs processing and sorting, which includes thorough de-nailing, removing damaged or unwanted sections, and sorting it into our racks based on profile and colour.

  3. Design: Either with you, custom for you, or purely by us, we use our extensive knowledge of the timber to design our work prior to construction. We produce detailed construction drawings for ourselves and our clients.

  4. Build: Using a combination of traditional woodworking techniques as well as modern machinery, we build all our designs in our Murwillumbah workshop with great passion for our craft.

  5. Install: We install all of our fixed joinery and furniture, and personally deliver all larger custom furniture. We work with local and trustworthy couriers for smaller, loose furniture pieces.
