Why recycled timber?

Recycled timber can come from many places - old railways, bridges, wharves, buildings, fences and more. The timber we use has been salvaged from old buildings, generally pre 1980, where it once held up walls, floors and roofs.

We use this timber because it has spent 50+ years drying out inside the protection of a building, meaning it is often in pristine condition and perfectly seasoned, primed for use in furniture and joinery.

“Back in the day” we didn’t have the same environmental concern we have now, so the loggers simply cut down the best trees they could find to mill into timber for buildings. These trees weren’t grown in plantations like today, but simply lived wild and free, with dozens of different species growing interdependently.

Some of the benefits of using recycled timber:

  • Milled from old growth forests that aren’t possible to find today, producing enduring and long-lasting furniture.

  • The grain reflects the life of a naturally grown tree living amongst the elements.

  • We’re not only preventing new trees from being cut down, but we’re reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

  • Character developed by slowly drying out for years and years.

  • Stable, seasoned timber is less likely to move, warp, cup or bend out of shape, meaning the furniture stays looking pristine as it came out of the workshop.on

OUR TIMBERS

We sort the timber into groups based on colour tone to curate mixes that work best for a range of interior schemes. These mixes are a guide only and part of the beauty of recycled timber is that every piece is unique.

We also have the ability to sort by pure species such as Spotted Gum or Blackbutt for smaller scaled jobs, however it will depend on stock availability at the time.

TIMBER OPTIONS

DRESSED: We plane the pieces back, to reveal the colour and grain within.

A “clean” finish, perfect for benchtops, detailed furniture and cabinetry. Dressing removes the original “skin” of the pieces, revealing the unique grain patterns and definitive black contrasting nail marks.

Our Dressed Options:

  1. Dressed Mixed - A mix of all dense hardwood species that we salvage. This option showcases the true recycled Australian experience.

  2. Dressed Coastal - A lighter mix; predominantly Blackbutt, Tallowwood and paler Spotted Gum. A blend of blonde, brown and straw coloured tones.

  3. Dressed Classic - A darker mix, featuring mostly Spotted Gum, Ironbark and Red Mahogany. Tones of dense brown, clay and mahogany.

NATURAL: We leave the weathered skin of the timber, only lightly working the wood to remove splinters.

The effect is highly organic and feels natural to touch, full of texture and deeply defined character. We can build most pieces with a natural finish, opting for more minimalistic, pure designs that let this unique finish stand out.
